I just came across this neat synopsis from Newsweek about obesity in cats and dogs that is based on information from the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. I was really surprised to learn that 54% of pet cats and dogs are considered overweight or obese. What was really interesting though, was that only 8-9% of owners would call their own animals obese. I have to admit, having a Garfield-like cat of my own, that they are easier to take care of when they are what I like to call "cuddly". After he lost weight, he had so much more energy to get into mischief in the middle of the night! You can check out the website for more interesting factoids here.

As cute as they are, obesity in animals is a serious issue. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, animals with obesity can develop numerous complications such as osteoarthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, pulmonary and heart diseases, injuries, kidney disease, cancer, and often have shortened lifespans. Therefore, it is important to talk to your veterinarian about your pet's weight.

I contend that the obesity problem exists in at least all mammals, in that no mammal evolved in an environment where food was in surplus, there was always a shortage. Only in the last 100 years has surplus food arrived. Since in the old days being able to store fat for the coming famine was an evolutionary advantage, bodies evolved to do this efficiently.
One example of this is my niece who is a vet has a cat that was feral for a while. If you put any food in front of the cat it will be eaten immediately and she will beg for more being always hungry. As a result she had to put the cat on a diet. I understand the same is also true of horses.

Factors to change earths rotation or revolution!!

In December 2004 a tsunami hit coastal areas around the Indian Ocean. This tsunami caused not only severe damage and loss of lives, but also affected the earths rotation. the tsunami shifted coastlines and elevations thus interfering with Earths rotation.

Now I am going to grace you with the knowledge about how scientists came to the conclusion of Neptune has seasons. The discovery of Neptune having spring occurred early on this year. Astronomer Larry Sromovsky states that he became aware of Neptune having a season by physical changes around its atmosphere. Such as bands of clouds becoming larger. Scientist have come to one theory about the seasonal changes, and that is, the brightness from the sun as Neptune revolves around it changes to various seasons.

The Big Bang Theory!!!!

there are a lot of different theories on how the universe was created, well one of the theories is the "Big Bang Theory." Basically What the Big Bang states is that there was a huge explosion in space and PRESTO! We're here! All of these scientist came together and said "Okay, something happened at the beginning of time and somehow the Earth was created." So they came up with the conclusion that about 10 to 15 billion years ago the Big Bang happened and with the explosion Everything was created. Edwin Hubble was actually the one to discover the whole theory in 1929! Crazy Huh!! He was actually in his "Thinking Place" when he figured it all out! the crazy thing is that we have no idea where his thinking place is. it could be his house, his lab, his library, etc. \We don't know! I found a website that states all that you need to know about the Big Bang Theory in order to become a Science WIZ!!!



P.S I think people say "easy as pie," because it is not really referring to the making of the actual pie, It is referring to the eating of the pie :D NOM NOM!

Animal Massacre of 2011

Tuesday October 11th started out as a good day for Zanesville, Ohio. Until the evening rolled around, and the massacre had begun, the animal massacre that is. You see a man and his wife had caged 57 wild furocious animals, and they had mysteriously been let out of their cages. 49 of these 57 animals were killed in this tramatic event, including 18 Bengal tigers, 17 Lions, 6 Black Bears, 2 Grizzly Bears, 3 Mountain Lions, 2 Wolves, and 1 Baboon. The reason this had to be done was, because the animals had been threatening small neighborhoods, and communities. the reserve owner, Mr. Thompson was believed to have let the animals out of their cages while his wife was gone and killed himself. He has been in and out of prison between the years for 1 count at having an animal at large, 2 counts of rendering animal waste, and 1 for cruelty to animals. Jack Hanna wildlife specialist, said that "the animals living conditions are abominable! They are living in their own filth!" the situation has been contained so hopefully we won't have another horrifying event such as this one for a long time.

As Inconstant As The North Star.

     For centuries poeple have relied on the North Star, or polaris for navigation. It is the most common navigation method, to follow the North Star if ever lost right? Well what most people dont know is that the Polaris is not very bright, it even changes its brightness from time to time. Talk about confusing!! The north star could easily be mixed up with any other star including Cephris THE brightest star in the Milky Way Galaxy. The North Star is always moving to! The earth wobbles on its axis so much, that when you look in the sky tonight, and see the North Star you have to wait 26 thousand years to see it that exact way again!! Crazy!!

     The Magnitude Scale is a scale that states the brightness of a star from 1 to 6 1 being the brightest 6 being the dimest. The difference is that 1 is 100 times brighter than 6! This cale is called the traditional scale. Ptolemy developed the first one which would be the historical scale. With the historical scale apparent magnitudes are what show the actual difference in the luminosity.

Week 3

If we don't study earth, and things that go on here on the earth, then how do you expect us to learn about other planets or things in space if we don't even know about earth? In order to Learn about other things in the solar system we have to not only know about but also understand earth too. Geoscientists study earth and how its systems work. Without geoscientists we wouldn't know a lot of things for example we wouldn't know what forces form mountains and we wouldn't know how mountains rise or how they are worn down by erosion or even about sediment and how it's deposited and eventually becomes rock again. Honestly geoscientists are AWESOME! As for "what can we do to make sure we Can make good decisions about the earth today and when we are adults" well I think that is a pretty self explanatory question. We can stop throwing trash out our window when were driving and just put it in a can when we get to where were going. We can also try riding a bike somewhere or walking instead of using our cars all they do is pollute but yes I do understand people need to get somewhere and it may be 10 miles away so ya but really if your going to your friends house and they live literally two blocks away I doubt you need to drive your car all the way there and all the way back when your ready to leave. I guess most of what were doing to this planet is do to laziness I mean throwing your trash out the window of your car thats a fact your being lazy and driving two blocks to your friends house you don't want to walk to great example of laziness. So maybe we should all just stop being lazy but ya in some cases you do need a car to go some places like work or school things like that.

Week 2

I think the most important rule is - (use extreme caution when using matches, a burner, or a hot plate. Only light burners when instructed and do not put anything into a flame unless specifically instructed to do so. Do not leave a lit burner unattended.)because if you were to leave a flame on unattended things could get out of hand and may result in the burning down of the school..... Yikes!!!! Also if you were careless with the flame someone could get hurt and that would be very upsetting! If this rule isn't followed people get get hurt property could get damaged and several other examples. The most useless rule would defiantly be ( dress appropriately - long hair must be tied back, dangling sleeves or jewelry, wear closed toe and heeled shoes.) I would hope people have the slightest bit of common sense and if You working with chemicals or fire tie your hair back unless for some reason you like the singed hair look and melted necklace look. A situation where this rule would apply is if your class was going to work with a burner and you had long hair and long necklaces on with flip flops on impersonally wouldn't want to catch on fire for a stupid reason such as my hair wasn't tied back.
